"Utterly brilliant" was the verdict on the first visit to the club of Simon Picton’s Westside Syncopators yesterday. With a terrific frontline of Andy Dickens, Al Nicholls and Dave Hewett, backed by a great rhythm section of Simon, plus Manel Alvarez and Rod Brown, they were absolutely first-class. Who would have thought that Irving Berlin’s waltz All Alone could make such a great jazz number?
